Looking back – to the year 1935 – «Germany Re-armed»

mai 14, 2010

“The China Journal, Vol. XXII, May 1935, No. 5″, under «Events and comments» by editor Arthur de C. Sowerby:

It is with a severe shock that the various European Governments have awakened to the fact that Germany has succeeded in fully re-arming, and now appears to be ready to enforce demands that she has been making for some time past. The inevitable answer to Germany is an all round increase of armaments, and there can be but one outcome to this, namely, another World War.

The horrors of such a happening cannot be described, but one thing is certain – it will be a war on civilians. While there are many who still believe in great armies of infantrymen, we doubt very much wether these will play any important part in the next war, for the reason that belligerant nations will concentrate on aerial attacks upon the great  industrial and commercial centres behind the fighting lines, which may easily mean that the armies in the field will become completely isolated and useless.

One other thing also is certain, and that is that, if the civilians of the world allow another World War to take place, they will have deserved everything they may get.»

Arthur de C. Sowerby could not have been more right …
